Here in St Joseph’s Church, we are fortunate to have a very active St Vincent de Paul Conference, serving not only our parish but the community of Retford and surrounding areas. The SVP is an international registered charity. Its vision is inspired by Christ’s message to love our neighbours as ourselves. Our main function is to tackle poverty in all its forms through the provision of practical assistance to those in need. This can sometimes be as little as a cup of tea and a chat with someone who is feeling sad or lonely. The concept of “need” is broader than financial hardship, so supporting people who are excluded or lonely forms a large proportion of the Society’s work
This last year has seen massive changes for everyone. Many people have been distressed by job loss and hardship due to Covid. People who have previously been self sufficient have had to turn to us for food vouchers, and vouchers for school uniforms and shoes, and IT tablets for schoolwork, even household equipment.
Because of coronavirus, we have not been able to visit people face to face, so we have resorted to using phones, ipads and computers in order to stay in touch, and even the old fashioned letters through the post! Delivering church newsletters, or groceries has been more of a “knock and drop” situation, where once we would have liked to stop and chat to our beneficiaries. Unfortunately visits to care homes and hospitals too have had to stop.
Some of our funds come to us via fundraising events and Church collections but these have stopped during the pandemic. We also receive funds from Head Office out of bequests that have been made, and also from local donations to the Conference. This year alone the St Joseph’s Retford Conference has spent over £6000 in Retford helping people in need.
When we offer help we do not make any distinction between helping people of any faith or none. All our members are DBS checked volunteers, some are able to be more actively involved than others. Some help by donating or fundraising. There is a role for everyone.
If you would like more information about St Joseph’s Retford SVP Conference please contact us – to join, to tell us about someone who needs our help, for yourself, or just to make an enquiry, on
