Founded as the Domestic Chaplaincy to Hermeston Grange - home of the Chaloner family - in 1857, St Helen's is an attractive Gothic Revival church built in the 14th century style. The Mission was established in 1868 from St Mary's Worksop. The church and rectory were built at the expense of the Chaloner family. The foundation stone was laid on 15 September 1868 and the church opened in 1869 seating 120 people. The dedication of the church was in memory of Edward Chaloner's daughter Helen. In 1871 the church and rectory were conveyed to the Trustees of the Diocese of Nottingham. The walls are of Roche Abbey stone and the walls of cedar.
Within the grounds of the church there is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, a Roman villa. The church is also the site of the Riddell family vault. The church has a Grade II listing. Its roof was repaired with assistance of a grant from Historic England. In 1980, the parish became part of the Diocese of Hallam and forms part of the Bassetlaw Deanery.
Our sister Parish of St Patrick came into being with the opening of a Mass centre in 1928 from Oldcotes. The present church was opened as a Chapel of Ease in 1939. The Parish itself was created in 1947. Like St Helen's it became part of the Diocese of Hallam in 1980.
At Easter 2018 the church of St Patrick, Harworth closed. The parish merged with St Helen, Oldcotes at that time. On 1st January 2019 the parish of St Helen, Oldcotes merged with St Mary & St Joseph the Worker, Worksop to form the new parish of St Jude.
